System thinking: Joining the dots for better regeneration

The built environment is often planned and delivered through separate disciplines, organisations and funding streams. But the places that work best do not operate in silos: transport, infrastructure, public realm, nature, development, community needs and economic opportunity all interact.

This episode explores the value of system thinking in regeneration - looking at places as connected systems rather than a collection of individual projects. Civic will examine why joining the dots from the earliest stages of a masterplan can produce better outcomes for people, improve connectivity and inclusion, and create places that are more attractive, resilient and successful over the long term.

The discussion will draw on major regeneration and masterplanning work, including Old Trafford, Mayfield and York Central, to explore how a one system approach can help teams deal with the scale and complexity of large sites. It will consider how integrating movement, infrastructure, nature-based solutions and inclusive design can shape places where people want to dwell, feel safer, build a stronger sense of ownership and stand the test of time.

The episode will also look beyond individual projects to the wider industry. With growing calls for the built environment sector to work more cohesively, the conversation will ask whether a more joined-up approach - across disciplines, places and policy - can help the sector make a stronger case to government and deliver better regeneration outcomes nationally.
